Hayward, California

Part of the Hayward Unified School District, Winton Middle School is one of eight local schools built during the post-World War II period. To modernize the school, HUSD chose Merrill-Morris Partners and HY Architects to lead the effort of improving mechanical systems, increase accessibility, and add a new Drama/Music facility. Site improvements included creation of an accessible passenger drop off area, a multipurpose basketball, pickleball, and volleyball play area, and outdoor classrooms to extend the learning environment. In addition to student-cultivated raised planting beds for edible gardens, stormwater management enhancements were incorporated between school buildings as an additional educational opportunity and contributed to a net-zero increase for impervious areas on the site.
