Alice Griffith Neighborhood - Blocks 2 & 4

San Francisco, California

Located in the Bayview-Hunters Point/Candlestick Point, the original Alice Griffith Neighborhood was home to 256 public housing units on 22.5 acres to be replaced by seven blocks of housing (including both public and affordable rental units), creating a new mixed-income neighborhood. Phase I consists of two buildings, Blocks 2 and 4, with 3-4 story flats and townhomes constructed over a parking podium.

Each building fronts the neighborhood’s new central park. The buildings are designed with an open courtyard, building community among the residents, and promoting healthy living through a strong connection to the outdoors. The courtyards support various activities and include a creative play structure for young children, and barbecue and picnic areas for residents and guests. Extensive use of curving built-in planters creates an intimate garden setting, while providing stormwater filtration with rain gardens and flow through planters. The accessible street level unit entries are particularly welcoming with trees and perennial plants. LEED Gold certification.
