San Domenico School

San Anselmo, California

San Domenico School is a 400-acre campus serving grades K-12. Private endowment provided for development of a gymnasium and performing arts center. The facilities nestle into a wooded area between the existing music building and Sleepy Hollow Creek. The creek runs through the campus and defines the southern edge of the site. MMP, in conjunction with a wetland biologist, prepared a biological assessment and mitigation recommendations to restore the creek to a sustainable natural state. MMP incorporated vegetated drainage swales into the site drainage plan to clean and minimize surface runoff into the creek.

MMP developed landscape features to reinforce the building organization with plantings and structures that provide visual cues to public entries, and screen service and private areas. A sculpture garden creates an intimate space between the music building and the new performing arts center. The landscape development included a new sustainable plant palette consisting of low water-use and native plant material that complement the oak woodland and coastal redwood plant communities that are endemic to the region. Our design incorporated numerous major existing redwood trees and made provisions for tree protection for both the short and long term. MMP provided full scope landscape architectural services, including stream bed alteration permit processing, construction documents and construction administration services.
